In 2044, Sally Javits starts penning a series of letters to her daughter Cricket, detailing how she met her father. Flashing back to 2014, just three days after leaving her first husband Gavin and moving in with her brother Danny and his husband Todd—who are trying to adopt a baby—Sally's best friend Juliet sets her up on a blind date with Frank, hoping for a casual fling. However, instead of forming a bond with Frank, Sally attempts to rekindle things with Gavin. Her plans shift when she realizes he won’t even open his finest wine to commemorate their reunion, highlighting their irreconcilable differences. After Danny and Todd successfully find a surrogate, the group heads out for drinks to celebrate, where Sally tells Frank they should remain friends. Fast forward to 2044, and Sally reveals that Frank is indeed Cricket's father.
