Charles takes the students to their new location, while Mrs. Oleson tags along, hoping to meet someone distinguished. The story touches on themes of racism, sparked by Joe Kagan's acceptance into the Walnut Grove church, which Mrs. Oleson vehemently opposes due to his race. Meanwhile, Harriet, eager to see the new blind students and their teacher, Hester-Sue Terhune, dresses to impress, believing Terhune to be a refined woman. She insists on walking rather than sit beside Joe on the wagon.
