An enigmatic extraterrestrial object launches an assault on a Navy vessel and its personnel. Dr. Molly Anne Caffrey, a government contingency analyst, receives a call from Deputy National Security Advisor J.T. Baylock, urging her to probe into the occurrence. She is given the freedom to select a specialized scientific team to assist her in the investigation.
