Alec's old friend Emmett comes back to Avonlea, bringing along his new wife and a baby. Struggling with a failing farm, Emmett turns to Alec for assistance, hoping to catch fish for the winter. However, their fishing trip takes a tragic turn when their ship goes down, resulting in Emmett's death. Burdened by guilt, Alec takes on the responsibility of managing both his own farm and Emmett's.
