The tides of war have shifted, bringing both triumphs and losses. Brett and Semiramis return to Mont Royal after a harrowing brush with Northern forces. Orry learns that Justin has kidnapped Madeline and swiftly comes to her rescue, leading to their marriage. Virgilia encounters Dorothy Dix, who agrees to take her on as a nurse thanks to Congressman Sam Greene's endorsement. Orry aims to thwart the blockade runners but narrowly escapes capture by a Northern patrol, fortuitously running into George along the way. Bent harbors grand ambitions for power in the South, counting on Ashton to support him, but his vengeful ex-lover derails his plans. Meanwhile, Charles, injured, finds refuge at Augusta Barclay's farm to recover. At Lehigh Station, Stanley Hazard, persuaded by his ambitious wife, foolishly becomes embroiled in dubious dealings.
