After the passing of his wife, Michael Endicott relocates to Rome, Italy, with his three daughters to take a teaching position at the American Overseas School. His sister, Harriet, comes to stay with them momentarily before heading back to Iowa. As the second season unfolds, Michael's father-in-law, Andy Pruitt, arrives from Iowa after selling his farm, and settles into their apartment, adding to the family's dynamic in their new Italian setting.
