Thomas Martinez, Carlos' uncle, is busy organizing his own funeral for next week, even though he isn't sick. He confides in Sister Bertrille about experiencing what he refers to as the Martinez Sign—a phenomenon that has been observed by generations of the men in his family, all of whom died exactly seven days after noticing it.
