The Sierra Gorda is not a single environment but a mosaic of varied landscapes, each defined by its elevation. On the eastern side, mist-laden cloud forests transition to a parched desert in the west. This region boasts majestic cacti, a clear river home to the distinctive axolotl, and a towering 1,400-foot monolith that honors the area's volcanic history. At higher altitudes, tropical and alpine plant and animal species blend together, showcasing the remarkable biodiversity that makes the "wild heart of central Mexico" truly special.
