Dennis Merton arrives at Ranby Hall to look into the unexpected death of racing driver Jack Maclean, who suffered a lethal insulin overdose while in the care of Liz Merrick and Dennis's wife, Jenny. At the same time, Vernon encounters an old acquaintance who presents him with a tempting business venture, but this opportunity soon spirals into significant complications for him.
