Lovejoy's friend Boswell, who operates a traveling fair, enlists Lovejoy's help to sell some silver candlesticks. Trouble arises when the police intervene, claiming the candlesticks are stolen, leading to Boswell's arrest. In the midst of this chaos, an American acquaintance of Charlotte expresses interest in purchasing the fairground Carousel, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.
