While conducting a routine patrol in a public park, an Alaskan police officer discovered the body of a woman who had been brutally stabbed. During the autopsy, the medical examiner took special care to preserve the section of her rib cage that bore the lethal injury. Days later, a knife suspected to be the murder weapon was found two thousand miles away. This presented forensic scientists with a rare chance to analyze the microscopic markings on the knife and compare them to those on the victim's bone.
