S1E1 The Guerrilla Base of the King - Athelney, Somerset

In the inaugural episode of Time Team, Tony and his crew head to Athelney in Somerset to explore a cluster of hills that were once islands in a swamp. These hills served as the final stronghold for Alfred the Great after enduring several defeats against Viking invasions. It is here that Alfred ignited the rally that would lead to the reclamation of much of Wessex, ultimately laying the groundwork for the future nation of England.
